organization to meet the needs of the community and others we serve.
Russ co-chaired Toy Modification for his club for years. and now is it's
chairman. He was also instrumental, along with fellow Pioneer Bob Erne, in
developing the Electronic Map. They were instrumental in writing and conducting
the seminars on the Playground Map for the Telephone Pioneers at their
Annual Meeting in 1994, which was held in Pittsburgh, PA. At the time, Liberty
Bell Chapter won the "People Who Care Award".
Russ's love for the children with special needs is obvious when you see the
wooden toys he has made for children in therapy at the Delaware Curative
Workshop, and Alfred I. DuPont hospital.
He has also adapted equipment other than toys to make learning and playing
easier for some of the kids. Included is removal of seat backs and also steps
that can be adjusted for any size child, which helps them sit erect, which is
often a problem for some special needs children. He modified a motorized car to
help the children get around the playground with their friends.
Russ has made over 30 English Carts which are small three-wheeled scooters that
children with Spina Bifada or other needs can sit in and propel themselves
around using their arms.
Russ has won several awards: Chapter Pioneer in Excellence Award, Telephone
Pioneer of America Pacesetter Award for Dedication, Good Neighbor Award
presented by the President of Verizon-Delaware, Merit Awards from Alfred I.
DuPont Hospital and Delaware Curative Workshop.
Russ is known as the "Toy Maker". This is just another facet of Pioneering as in
the slogan "Answering the Call of Those in Need". If Russ can be a small part of
a childs growth, that is his reward.
